GEORGE TOWN – At least 20 cleaners at Queensbay Mall have contracted Covid-19 over the past two weeks.

A mall employee told The Vibes that the mall’s management is aware of the matter.

“A cleaner told me that she had just finished her 10-day quarantine and now, some of her friends have been taken by the Health Ministry to receive treatment because they have also tested positive for Covid-19,” he said.

It is understood that 80% of the cleaning staff at Queensbay Mall are foreigners, mostly from Indonesia and Bangladesh.

The Vibes has reached out to the mall but was unable to get a response from a Queensbay spokesman.

Currently, the mall is still operating as usual, and a check found that no official notification on the issue has been posted by its management so far.

Meanwhile, 19 primary schools in the state have reported Covid-19 infections, including nine Chinese primary schools and 10 national schools, with SJK(C) Keng Koon in Simpang Ampat recording the highest number of cases at 16.

In addition, three secondary schools in Penang have also reported infections, with Butterworth Vocational College logging 35 cases, and Wesley Methodist International School in Jelutong and GEM International School in Simpang Ampat recording one case each.

Penang today recorded 200 new Covid-19 cases, the second-highest after Selangor, which recorded 661. – The Vibes, March 31, 2021
