MIRI – Two more Sarawak districts today cancelled their Ramadan bazaars amid rising Covid-19 infections.

The Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) and Sarikei district council, which oversees local council affairs in Bintulu and Sarikei, announced the cancellation of Ramadan bazaars in these districts.

BDA general manager Muhamad Yakup Kari said there is no choice but to cancel the bazaars.

“In the interest of the rakyat, we cannot hold these bazaars during this time when the infection rate is rising sharply, especially here in Bintulu,” he said in a statement.

Yesterday, Miri City Council, Kuching South City Hall and Kuching North City Hall called off their plans to hold the bazaars from April 12 to May 12.

They issued public statements to inform the people of their latest decision in light of escalating daily infections.

Kuching North City Hall was the first to cancel Ramadan bazaars under its jurisdiction.

Sarawak has 40 local district councils.
