MIRI – Sarawak today saw six Covid-19 fatalities, the highest daily record to date, bringing the state’s death toll to 162.
The state Disaster Management Committee secretariat said Kapit Hospital’s four deaths involved women aged 33, 35, 58 and 72.
The other two deaths are a 48-year-old woman in Sarikei Hospital and a 75-year-old man in Bintulu Hospital, said the secretariat.
Today, three new clusters and 615 new infections were recorded statewide.
The new clusters involve Sg Senibung in Julau district where 14 secondary school students were infected, Pondok in Belaga where nine office workers in a government agency tested positive for Covid-19, and Jalan Sebauh-Bintulu where 61 students in a secondary school and nearby villagers contracted the virus.
The total number of clusters in the state stands at 61.
Of the 615 new infections today, Bintulu district accounted for 106 of them, followed by Sibu (90), Pakan (67), Kuching (55), Miri (52), Mukah (38), Kanowit (31), Lundu (25), Selangau (23), Saratok (19), Sarikei (16), and Kapit (14), with other districts logging fewer than 10 cases each.
The secretariat said Sarawak has imposed an immediate ban on incoming travellers who have been to India in the past 30 days.
“We want to prevent the spread of the Indian virus variant to Sarawak, hence the need to impose the ban.” – The Vibes, April 26, 2021
