GEORGE TOWN – The people of Penang should brace themselves for the implementation of stricter controls in the state including the movement control order (MCO).
Gone are the days when the state managed to achieve zero cases for 100 days.
What Penang has experienced for the last six months is its inability to control the spread of the coronavirus.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is chairing the national Covid-19 meeting tomorrow, will decide on the fate of Penang.
“Together with the rest of the country, we have to face the reality that stricter controls have to be put in place.
“Necessary action has already been taken in other states with the implementation of the MCO,” he said.
He also said the “Penang Lawan Covid-19” campaign has failed to match the spread of the virus.
“There was a happy time when we managed to achieve 100 days with zero cases. However, we were not able to control the virus’ spread in the last six months.
“Covid-19 cases continued to increase these past two weeks and continue to affect the people and the economy,” he said at the Business Events Penang 2020 Annual Review Launch today.
Penang recorded a total of 2,325 cases in the past two weeks, between April 23 and May 6.
Today, the state recorded a new high of 305 cases, bringing the cumulative number to 20,945 cases.
Out of these positive cases, 222 involved locals.
The largest cluster is from Jalan Besar Sungai Jawi with a whopping 76 cases.
However, the district with the most cases continues to be the northeast district with 722 cases, followed by Seberang Prai Tengah with 624 cases and Seberang Prai Selatan with 365 cases. – The Vibes, May 6, 2021
