Aux cop arrested for crying ‘bomb’ at Tawau airport

TAWAU – A man was arrested by police yesterday for claiming to have a bomb at Tawau airport after getting frustrated over the long wait during check-in.

District police chief Peter Umbuas said the 30-year-old from Semporna, who works as an auxiliary cop in Selangor, was arrested at 8.20am.

“The suspect, who was with his wife and two children, arrived at Tawau airport from Semporna at 7am to fly to Kuala Lumpur, but they were forced to wait a long time,” he told a press conference here today.

“When staff at the check-in counter were inspecting items in their bags, the suspect loudly said ‘There’s a bomb’. This was heard by employees at the counter and people nearby.”

He said a bomb disposal unit was tasked with inspecting the suspect’s bag, but found only food inside.

The suspect was released on police bail today after being held for 24 hours, and will be investigated for criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Penal Code. – Bernama, May 21, 2021
