KUALA LUMPUR – The Human Resources Ministry via the Social Security Organisation (Socso) is ready to assist all the victims involved in the LRT incident on Monday who qualify for benefits under the Employees Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4) and Self-Employment Social Security Act 2017 (Act 789).

Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan said under Act 4, Socso provides protection to employees who had an accident while working, or were traveling to and from work, through the Occupational Disaster Scheme.

“In this regard, the victims of the LRT train accident who contributed to Socso and are confirmed to have suffered an occupational accident are eligible to receive assistance and benefits under the Occupational Disaster Scheme.”

He said those under the self-employed category that are registered under and contributing to the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme under Act 789 are also eligible to apply for Socso benefits if the accident occurs while they are self-employed, or traveling to and from work.

“Among the benefits provided to eligible accident victims under the two Acts is free medical treatment at Socso panel clinics, or government clinics and hospitals.

“In addition, those on doctor-certified sick leave will receive temporary disability benefit payments for the duration of their leave.”

He said those who are confirmed to have suffered serious injuries resulting in permanent disability due to the accident will be assisted with permanent disability benefits and physical rehabilitation facilities – supply of prosthetic, orthotic and orthopedic devices, such as prosthetic arms and legs, crutches, wheelchairs and special shoes.

“Taking into account the victims’ condition and high possibility of undergoing treatment, I call on their employer or family members to immediately submit a claim for benefits at any nearby Socso office.

“The ministry and Socso are committed to processing their benefit claims and ensure all assistance are channelled through as soon as possible.

“For any further matters and inquiries, please call Socso’s careline at 1-300-22-8000 or email [email protected].

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my sympathy to the victims of this accident and hope they recover soon.” – The Vibes, May 26, 2021
