MIRI – One Covid-19 patient linked to Miri Central Market here has died while several are down with the virus, resulting in the market being closed indefinitely.
Miri Mayor Adam Yii said: “The Miri City Council has decided today to close indefinitely all sections of Miri Central Market after one Covid-19 death was reported there and other infections linked to the place.
“This closure includes the wet market, cooked food stalls, drink stalls and so on. The market is shut pending advice from the health authorities,” he told reporters here after chairing an online council meeting.
This is the fourth time the market has been hit by Covid-19 infections, but the first time a patient linked to the market has died.
The Vibes learnt that a trader operating there suddenly collapsed last week, was rushed to Miri Hospital, and later pronounced dead.
Yii today confirmed the cause was Covid-19, but he declined to disclose further details of the deceased.
The city council is carrying out sanitisation and decontamination operations as well, he added.
The city council advised members of the public to stay away from the area while sanitisation operations are being done.
Previously, other traders and customers tested positive for Covid-19.
