GEORGE TOWN – A 6-year-old girl has died from smoke inhalation when a fire broke out at a Rise Collection II Apartment unit here this morning.

The 9am incident occurred when her parents went out to shop for essential items with her 1-year-old brother.

The couple left the victim, who was the eldest of three siblings, at home with their 4-year-old son.

Both victims were rescued by other residents and rushed to Penang Hospital.

However, the girl died an hour later due to smoke inhalation, while her brother is being treated in the intensive care unit.

North-east district police chief Soffian Santong said the female victim arrived at the emergency unit at about 9.40am, adding that the case has been classified as sudden death.

He said five fire engines from Jalan Perak and Lebuh Pantai were dousing the fire when policemen from Jalan Patani arrived at the scene.

The blaze destroyed about 80% of the apartment units on the 19th floor, while other units are unaffected. – The Vibes, June 5, 2021
