MIRI – Destitute folk are thronging seven mosques and surau in Sibu each day to get aid from the Charity Shelves food bank.
Sarawak Assistant Public Health Minister Dr Annuar Rapaee said they comprise not only Muslims, but also individuals of other faiths.
“I am very happy to see this charitable cause offering help to people of all races and religions. They are coming to the mosques and surau daily to collect food. They know we are willing to help everyone.
“Regardless of race and religion, anyone in need of food is welcome to come to the mosques and surau,” he said in his daily updates in social media chat groups.
The initiative, which began on Saturday, is a joint effort between the houses of worship and Dr Annuar.
The Nangka assemblyman said the food bank aims to help those who have lost their jobs amid the Covid-19 pandemic and people in dire straits.
“We welcome food donations from the community. Those in need can collect food items after getting permission from the people in charge at the mosques and surau.”
Masjid Babusalam, Masjid Bahagia Jaya Teku, Surau Darul Islam, Surau Darul Ehsan, Surau Darul Hijrah, Surau Edruce and Surau Maawa are involved in the project.
Other mosques and surau will join the initiative in stages, as it expands to more locations.
Dr Annuar said non-Muslims, too, can donate towards the food bank.
