KUALA LUMPUR – Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) director Datuk Dr Heric Corray served his last day today at one of the largest public health facilities in the country, as the nation still struggles with the Covid-19 pandemic, logging its highest caseload ever today at 13,215.

Dr Corray has served with HKL since 2018, when he was transferred there from his position as the director for Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

Nephrologist Dr Sunita Bavanandan bid her former boss farewell in a touching Facebook post tonight, saying that his leadership had inspired the hospital’s staff to do their best in serving the public amidst the global health crisis.

“Today we bid farewell with the heaviest of hearts to our pengarah Datuk Dr Heric Corray, who is retiring after three all-too-short years at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

“From the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and through all sorts of other challenges, he has been an exemplary leader and has kept all levels of staff working together and grounded in a common cause to do our best, and to be patient-centred,” said Dr Sunita.

The hospital’s forensics specialist, Dr Ahmad Hafizam Hasmi, also penned a poem in Bahasa Melayu as a tribute to the retired hospital director.

Dr Heric...
Dia, (He)
Seorang yang penuh hikmah, (A man full of wisdom)
Sentiasa menunjuk jalan, (Always showing the way)
Merungkai yang tersimpul, (Unraveling difficulty)
Setiap jabatan diberi perhatian (All departments were looked after)
Segala keperluan, diusahakan ada, (All our needs were met)
Apa jua diutarakan didengar teliti, (Whatever we raised was heard)
Keputusannya tegas tetapi adil, (His decisions were firm but fair)
Dalam serius ada tawanya. (Still laughing during serious times)
Dia akan sentiasa diingati, (He will always be remembered)
Kerana dia, (Because he)
Ketua yang terpuji, (Is an admirable leader)
Ketua yang dihormati, (Is a respected leader)
Ketua yang disayangi (Is a beloved leader)
Happy retirement Datuk Heric, please take care and stay safe.
Maaf atas segala kesilapan (We apologise for all our mistakes).”

Meanwhile, Patient for Patients Safety Malaysia chairman Manvir Victor lambasted the government for not granting Dr Corray an extension to his contract, seeing how the nation is suffering while HKL remains one of the country’s centres for Covid-19 treatment.

“His leadership will be sorely missed especially now with the handling of the pandemic. He has been a shining star in healthcare when it has been much needed.

“One would think with the lack of leadership shown at times in public healthcare, with irresponsible and mind-boggling statements, someone like Datuk Heric would be retained to ensure that we can win this fight on behalf of the rakyat,” said Victor. – The Vibes, July 15, 2021
