GEORGE TOWN – The Communications and Multimedia Ministry needs to play an important role in helping disseminate information on the Delta Covid-19 variant that is now spreading in Malaysia.

Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin said most people have not been exposed to the dangers of the Delta variant.

“I think the health campaign on Covid-19 conducted by the ministry is still stuck in the first variant, where it first spread in Wuhan, China.

“People should be informed with clearer information, whether to wear a double-layer mask and (take) appropriate precautionary measures to avoid being infected with (the) Delta variant,” he said after visiting the Bayan Baru vaccination centre today.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in his press conference yesterday said the Delta variant can spread in 15 seconds, and the variant is also 60% stronger than other strains.

Compared to previous Covid-19 positive cases, he said, exposed individuals could infect the virus in less than 15 minutes at a distance of 1m.

The Delta variant, originally dubbed B.1.617.2, was first detected in Maharashtra, western India last October.

To date, the variant has spread to more than 100 countries, including Malaysia. – The Vibes, July 16, 2021
