KUALA LUMPUR – A 24-year-old man who was allegedly beaten up by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) officers at home and in front of his family has passed away in custody.
Rights group Eliminating Deaths & Abuse in Custody Together (Edict) said that the detainee died on Tuesday, in AADK’s Kuala Muda detention centre in Kedah.
Upon contacting the victim’s family, EDICT was told that the victim who was handcuffed was beaten with a baton by AADK officers.
The victim was said to have screamed in pain as AADK officers stomped on his neck and body.
This incident allegedly occurred on July 18, at 9pm.
“At 1am on July 19, the victim's family received information that the detainee was in critical condition at the hospital,” Edict said in a statement.
Should these allegations prove legitimate, Edict said it is clear that AADK’s detention of the victim was both inhumane and illegal.
The group urged the Kedah police department to investigate the personnel involved in the matter, adding that the Attorney-General Chamber’s should prosecute those guilty of such inhumane acts.
