GEORGE TOWN – A special team to deal with hazardous material (hazmat) from the Bayan Baru Fire and Rescue Station was mobilised to help clean up a chemical spill at the Penang International Airport’s warehouse this afternoon.
The incident at 3.28pm saw some 1.5 liters of the corrosive liquid chemicals spill out, raising a scare as the fumes may be toxic.
A spokesman for the Penang fire and rescue department said when the team that arrived at the scene found that the chemical liquid had dried on the floor.
“The hazmat commander then ordered members who were fully dressed in personal protective equipment (PPE) to do the cleaning work.
“The cleaning work in the contaminated area was done using soda ash,” he said to the pressmen.
He added that no one was injured in the incident. – The Vibes, July 28, 2021
