NIBONG TEBAL – The garbage disposal site at Jalan Pulau Burung here caught fire again today, where it took roughly one hour for firefighters to get it under control.

A spokesman said firefighters received an emergency call at 6.31am this morning and two fire engines from the Nibong Tebal and Perai fire brigades rushed to the scene.

“The fire brigade took early action by performing a fire-breaking procedure to prevent the fire from spreading to other places.

“The (0.3 ha) fire was controlled at 7.39am this morning using water from a water tanker,” he said to members of the press.

At the moment, he added, the battle against the blaze is still ongoing with the assistance of volunteer firefighters.

There were no casualties in the incident and the authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.

This is not the first incident involving a fire at the Pulau Burung dump site.

Last February, firefighters took up to eight hours to put out a 0.8ha fire at the Pulau Burung dump site.

The state only has two dump sites – the 16.4ha Pulau Burung site serving the mainland and the 21.4ha disposal centre in Jelutong to serve the island. – The Vibes, July 30, 2021
