MIRI – The ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition is currently in a shaky position due to the current political crisis faced by the Perikatan Nasional administration, said Sarawak PKR information chief Abun Sui Anyit.
Abun, a lawyer based here, said should the crisis drag on, GPS will end up going into the upcoming state elections in an unstable position.
“This is because GPS has been depending on Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for federal support in many aspects, including political and financial support.
“With the PM and Bersatu struggling to hold on to power in Putrajaya every day, Sarawak will see GPS very much alone in fighting to return to power in the coming state elections.
“If GPS insists on going ahead with the stance taken by several of its leaders to have a state election this September, GPS will go into battle without a strong national backing,” he told The Vibes today.
Abun said GPS will likely petition the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to extend the emergency in Sarawak alone in an effort to continue to be the caretaker state government.
“The last state assembly has expired; that is a fact,” he added.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah yesterday expressed his utmost disappointment with law minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan’s statement in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday morning that the government has revoked all emergency ordinances, despite the matter not having first received royal assent.
He also expressed disappointment that his decree to Takiyuddin and Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun for the proposed revocation of the ordinances to be tabled and debated in Parliament was not executed.
In response, Muhyiddin’s office insisted there is no need to debate the revocation, pointing to a royal audience at noon next Tuesday. – The Vibes, July 30, 2021
