KOTA KINABALU – Umno’s Kimanis MP Datuk Mohamad Alamin has stressed that he will not be switching his present support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration and Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Speaking to The Vibes, Mohamad said he is maintaining his support for PN, as the party’s state chapter has reiterated many times before.
However, Mohamad admitted that he remains uncertain about the stand of his fellow Sabah Umno man, Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.
Sabah Umno has two MPs and 16 assemblymen in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition.
“I will still support the PN government and the question of the status of the prime minister, I am leaving it to Parliament as Muyhiddin said earlier,” he said.
Mohamad said Sabah Umno has repeatedly stated that it will support Perikatan Nasional and, therefore, will continue to do so despite recent political developments involving the party at the federal level.
In the meantime, Bung, who is also Sabah Umno chairman, has yet to respond to queries from The Vibes over his stance.
Yesterday, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced that the party will withdraw its support for PN and declared that Muhyiddin no longer has the support of the majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
In response, Muhyiddin claimed that he still holds the majority and said a vote of confidence over his position as prime minister will be made at the Dewan Rakyat next month to determine his legitimacy.
Meanwhile, Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Joachim Gunsalam said a change in Sabah’s state government in view of the political uncertainties at the federal level will not resolve the state’s Covid-19 problems.
The Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) vice-president said such a move would be a waste of time and the state government, which won the Sabah election last year, should be allowed to give its full attention to resolving Covid-19 issues.
“This is definitely not the time for a change in government. How can we be sure that the spread of Covid-19 will stop after we change the government?
“Or maybe it will get worse… there is no certainty," Gunasalam said.
Yesterday, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor, who is also GRS chairman, said GRS leaders have reached a consensus to maintain cooperation in the state government and uphold the mandate given by the people during elections last year. – The Vibes, August 4, 2021
