KUALA LUMPUR – Following this morning’s “just a Bersatu meeting”, the party’s collapse may be imminent judging from the remarks by Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof.
Indicating that it was a difficult meet, the supreme council member told the waiting press that “certain irresponsible quarters are putting their personal needs ahead of the nation’s well-being”.
He hinted at another statement coming from Bersatu president and Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin tomorrow.
“God willing, there will be an announcement (by Muhyiddin) tomorrow. Whatever it is, let’s just wait for tomorrow.”
It is expected that the prime minister will have an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong tomorrow morning.
Redzuan said the Perikatan Nasional government is subservient to the federal constitution.
“We are subservient to the constitution. If they withdraw their support for reasons of self-interest, we need to manage things properly.
“It now depends on the Agong to ensure the people and country are led by a concerned government.”
Bersatu No. 2 and special adviser to the prime minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu was not as forthcoming after leaving the PN headquarters at the Publika shopping square here.
He told reporters that the leaders present merely attended a party meeting.
Members of the Bersatu top leadership gathered for a special meeting at the PN headquarters.
Among those present were Redzuan, Faizal, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin, Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, and Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mansor Othman.
Independent MP Datuk Xavier Jayakumar was also spotted entering the building, as well as Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Mohd Rashid Hasnon and Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Edmund Santhara Kumar Ramanaidu.
The flurry of rumours and meetings comes on the heels of Muhyiddin’s televised announcement on Friday that has been panned as “daylight bribery” and a last-ditch attempt at clinging on to power.
The prime minister appealed for support from the opposition by promising a number of reforms on the condition that survives a confidence vote in Parliament.
Amid swirling speculation of his resignation, with critics saying the announcement is a public admission of his loss of support, it was reported yesterday that a number of ministry officials were clearing their offices in anticipation of Muhyiddin stepping down. – The Vibes, August 15, 2021
