MIRI – It is crucial for the Sarawak government to acquire a sufficient amount of Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines for those aged 3 and above.

Miri MP Dr Michael Teo Yu Keng, who is also a medical doctor, told The Vibes that the Delta variant is the cause of the surge in infections and deaths in the state.

“It is thus crucial to vaccinate as many people as possible and as young as possible.

“Latest medical and scientific evidence showed that Sinovac and Sinopharm are effective in tackling even the Delta variant.

“Sinovac and Sinopharm are safe, even for kids as young as 3 years old, provided the vaccine is not the mRNA type like Pfizer, and this has been proven by established professional research bodies.

“I have read through the latest published report from a study in Hungary, where Sinovac and Sinopharm have helped prevent the Delta variant from taking root in that country.

“I have also read another report published by international experts that the Pfizer vaccine loses its effectiveness after six months of injection.

“Sarawak must thus acquire enough stock of both Sinovac and Sinopharm without delay.

“Don’t just vaccinate the teenagers.

“Vaccinate every Sarawakian aged 3 and above with Sinovac or Sinopharm," said the PKR Sabah and Sarawak vice-president.

He added that Sarawak has the highest number of Delta variant cases in the country, resulting in the state being second to Selangor in daily infections.

Sarawakians alarmed by the current situation have also taken to social media to appeal for a total lockdown.

The state Disaster Management Committee secretariat yesterday announced that there were 15 new Covid-19 deaths, bringing the death toll to 560, while 3,747 new infections were recorded.

The secretariat also said that 35 new locations comprising villages, longhouses, housing estates, commercial sites and workplaces have been placed under the enhanced movement control order yesterday. – The Vibes, September 6, 2021
