MIRI – Perikatan Nasional component parties such as Bersatu and PAS or even Umno for that matter will not be allotted any seats to contest in the upcoming 12th Sarawak election.

Sarawak’s ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition has confirmed that it will field its candidates at all 82 state constituencies.

GPS, comprising Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United People’s Party, Parti Rakyat Sarawak, and Progressive Democratic Party will be fielding their candidates respectively.

PBB vice-president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah told a press conference at his office in Kuching today that there will be no seats for PN.

“GPS and PN are friends and we work as partners at the national level. However, at the Sarawak state level, GPS has its own candidates for the 12th state elections.

“There will be no seats for any PN parties to contest in Sarawak. PN are Malaya-based parties. In Sarawak, GPS knows the state better,” he said.

Urging PN parties not to lobby for any seats in the state, Karim said GPS has already identified their potential candidates for the polls.

“PN parties must understand the local situation in Sarawak,” he said.

Karim said any lobbying by PN parties to contest in Sarawak will only cause a split in the relationship between GPS and PN.

It is learnt that the Sarawak government is expected to call for the state polls soon, with November being the speculated month.

At present, GPS controls 68 of the 82 state seats in Sarawak. – The Vibes, September 21, 2021
