GEORGE TOWN – Police have noticed a significant drop in travellers heading to Penang over the weekend after it told local residents to be wary of the resurgence of Covid-19 in the state.
Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said there was a 28% drop in visitors from September 17 to September 19.
“So, the number of Covid-19 infections has also dropped as there was less movement of people. Naturally there will be lesser cases of infections, and as a result the state registered 1,001 infections yesterday.
“I do not know why the people did not come out; we don’t know whether it was the outreach programme that the police conducted over the weekend, but that was our finding when it comes to public movement in the state,” he said at a press conference today.
He said in its “outreach” programme, police monitor public movement at beaches and recreational parks as a preventive measure to break the Covid-19 pandemic chain.
The police had visited Padang Kota Lama on September 18 and found it surprising that there were few people at the popular hangout, as well as fewer people at beaches on the island.
The authorities had used drones to monitor recreational areas in order to ensure the people adhere to standard operating procedures to prevent the spread of the virus. – The Vibes, September 22, 2021
