MIRI – Sarawakians traveling between districts must continue to observe Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) even with inter-district travel restrictions being lifted.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas said that while people are now free to move about, they should also take protective measures.
“I would strongly advise those planning to return to their villages and longhouses in the interiors to take the strictest precautions in doing so.
“Please do your own testing using the Covid-19 self-test kits now readily available in shops and pharmacies before you set out on your journeys.
“This is the least you can do to protect your grandpas, grandmas, parents, aunties and uncles and young ones from Covid-19.
“When the SDMC (Sarawak Disaster Management Committee) made the decision to lift the inter-district travel ban (last week) and do away with needing police permits to travel through districts, the transmission of Covid-19 was on a downward trend.
“However, we have noticed that the transmissions from urban to rural districts have increased again,” he said at a thanksgiving prayer ceremony in conjunction with Sarawak Governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud’s 85th birthday here today.
Sarawak recorded 1,339 new infections and eight fatalities today.
A total of 21 individuals were admitted into intensive care units, with 17 of them requiring oxygen support and ventilators.
Kuching recorded 431 cases, Miri 179, and Sibu 115, while other districts logged several dozen cases each.
The eight fatalities involved individuals aged between 52 and 80, reported in Kuching, Bintulu, Sibu, Kapit, Sarikei and Sri Aman. – The Vibes, October 8, 2021
