MIRI – The mayors of both Kuching South and Miri are likely to be candidates for the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (Supp) during the upcoming state polls.

Supp, a component party of the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), is said to have submitted the names of mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng for the Batu Lintang seat in Kuching and mayor Adam Yii for the Pujut seat in Miri, respectively.

When asked by reporters at separate locations recently, both Wee and Yii said that they have left the matter to their party leadership to decide.

They are both two-term mayors in their respective cities.

Both seats, Batu Lintang and Pujut, were won by the opposition during the state election five years ago.

The incumbent in Batu Lintang is See Chee How, who is a Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) presidential council member.

He won in 2016 on the PKR ticket but he left the party and joined PSB two years ago.

PSB is expected to renominate See in Batu Lintang.

Meanwhile, the Pujut incumbent until 2019 was Ting Tiong Choon of DAP.

He won the seat in 2016 against BN’s Hii King Chiong but was disqualified from it two years ago due to controversy over his alleged Australian citizenship.

The Pujut seat has been left vacant since.
