SEBERANG JAYA – Penang Umno today expressed its intention to work with PAS through Muafakat Nasional for the next general election.
State Umno chairman Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir said the party was also willing to compromise and share seats with PAS if the Islamist party was willing to continue its cooperation.
“We have 15 Malay seats in Penang, and Umno is ready to tolerate PAS. Umno does not want to sever ties with PAS.
“Only with PAS can we compromise, the others, no way!” he said at a press conference after attending the Bukit Mertajam Umno division meeting, today.
When asked whether PAS and Umno had discussed the distribution of seats in Penang, Musa said talks had been held before the Melaka election.
“At that time, the results achieved were positive, but after the Melaka election, we have not met yet.
“After this, I will call PAS and meet again to have another discussion.”
Musa said Penang Umno would also field candidates in all the seats contested by Bersatu in the next election.
He said the decision not to work with Bersatu was also final and had not changed since the motion was passed last year.
“We still will not cooperate with Bersatu. Penang Umno is still with the same principle, which is to reject Bersatu.”
In the meantime, Musa said, all 13 Umno divisions in Penang have completed holding their respective division meetings today.
He said Penang Umno unanimously supported the leadership of party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as prime minister.
“In other matters, we support every decision of the supreme council. We only follow the party’s decision because the party is our priority,” he said. – The Vibes, December 18, 2021
