KOTA KINABALU – The Sabah Health Department expects more school clusters to surface over the next couple of days.
Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said close contacts screening are now being conducted at six hostels and the department anticipates more clusters to surface.
“We will only know the final standing in one or two days,” he said in his daily Covid-19 briefing tonight.
Masidi said three new clusters have been detected in the state with one involving a school, taking the total number of school clusters to six to date.
SMK Tandek 2 recorded its first positive case on January 23, and ongoing screening has found 37 more people infected.
“The cluster has been identified as the Jalan Teritipan cluster involving students at the school who are mostly under Categories 1 and 2,” he said.
The second cluster is identified as the workplace cluster named Jalan Binunuk Cluster in Beaufort.
Masidi said the index case involves a 34-year-old woman who works for the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority.
“Screening done on work colleagues and family members found 13 more people infected with Covid-19.
“The infection may have happened during a meeting attended by many inside a single facility,” he said.
Another workplace cluster was detected near Beaufort and Kuala Penyu, with the source of infection believed to have been sparked by a 37-year-old health personnel from Kuala Penyu, Masidi said.
“The index case was found positive on January 12, and further screening found 24 first generation contacts, 17 second generation contacts and two third generation contacts,” he said.
Covid-19 cases in the state currently hovers over the 300 mark, with today’s number standing at 335 cases, up 21 cases from 314 cases yesterday. – The Vibes, January 26, 2022
