MIRI – A mega sales cum festivity event in Kuching city had triggered yet another Covid-19 cluster in the state capital of Sarawak.
The Citrawarna Keluarga Malaysia 2022 event, held at the Kuching Waterfront starting February 24, has led 21 people to test positive for the virus so far.
The State Disaster Management Committee secretariat today announced that the cluster was a direct result of the huge event.
“That event attracted about 50,000 people,” the secretariat said in a press statement.
“The index case was a 45-year-old who was taken ill after attending the event.
“Test results showed positive Covid-19 infection. So far, 20 others at the event have also been tested positive.”
The secretariat urged all those who attended the event to be vigilant. They must immediately go for health tests if they feel unwell, it added.
There are now four active clusters in the state.
Today saw another 1,727 new infections reported statewide, plus two new deaths caused by the Omicron variant.
A man in Kapit district aged 72 and a woman in Mukah aged 60 are the latest confirmed Covid-19 fatalities, the secretariat said.
Kuching today saw 584 new infections reported, while Miri recorded 281, Sibu (193), and Bintulu (115). Numerous districts had several dozen new cases each. – The Vibes, March 9, 2022
