KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for several localities in the nation.

Released at 4pm today, the warning listed areas in Kedah, Penang, Perak, Pahang, and Selangor as its predicted targets of the extreme weather.

Kuala Lumpur, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor, Sarawak, and Sabah were also warned of strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning.

On Friday, the department had issued an advisory on the beginning of the transitional monsoon phase, which is expected to start today until May.

In a statement, the department had said that the transitional phase will see regions in the country experiencing possible thunderstorms along with heavy rain and strong winds within a short period of time.

It added that such weather conditions might bring about flash floods and cause structural damage to unstable constructions.

MetMalaysia further advised the public to be more cautious during this period and to remain updated on weather forecasts and warnings issued by the department through its official website and social media platforms.

Updates can also be obtained from the department’s mobile app myCuaca, while members of the public can contact the department at its hotline (1-300-22-1638).
