THE Northeast Monsoon (NEM) officially begins today and is expected to continue until March 2027, bringing with it various weather-related challenges, including the risk of prolonged heavy rain and strong winds.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) advises the public to remain prepared for any potential extreme weather conditions throughout this monsoon season.
“The public is urged to stay informed about current weather developments by referring to official information, advisories, forecasts, and warnings issued by METMalaysia,” the agency stated via its Facebook page.
To ensure that the information received is accurate and timely, the public can obtain the latest updates through METMalaysia’s official channels: its website at www.met.gov.my, the myCuaca mobile application, social media, or the hotline at 1-300-22-1638.
“The public, especially those in high-risk areas, are advised to take precautionary measures in advance to ensure their own safety and that of their families throughout this Northeast Monsoon (MTL) season,” the statement added.
Malaysia has experienced haze since August due to forest and peatland fires in Indonesia, causing school closures, an increase in respiratory-related illnesses and flight disruptions.
For the NEM, three to five episodes of continuous heavy rain were forecast between November and January, which could cause flooding in low-lying areas and near rivers. – October 27, 2026
