GEORGE TOWN – Chants of “Bossku” rang throughout the Insasdunia food court in Bukit Mertajam today, following the arrival of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on a sojourn to Penang.
The Pekan MP arrived at the hawker centre in Jalan Kg Baru around 3.15pm after performing Friday prayers at a mosque in Sg Rambai near here earlier.
Roughly a thousand people were present to greet him as he was welcomed by several dragon and lion dance groups.
Penang Umno chief Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir and state MCA chief Datuk Tan Teik Cheng were also present to greet Najib.
Najib, Musa, and Tan proceeded to join the local community for a lunch organised by the food court management.
In a brief speech to the crowd, Najib called on the people of Penang to ensure Barisan Nasional’s return to the state government.
“BN is the only coalition that will bring prosperity to the state as no other party will bring it to the people of Penang,” he said.
About 30 minutes after chatting with the locals and getting selfies and fist bumps with the people, he left for another event at Chew Jetty here.
Prior to the event, however, a commotion ensued when DAP Women and Youth members apparently staged a protest by holding posters outside the food court.
In response, the organisers’ representative Tan Wei Ho said it was a private event and it is wrong for DAP members to gather to protest the event.
Meanwhile, roughly 700 people gathered beside the 78 Cafe Shop in Jalan Van Praagh off Jalan Perak, here, to welcome Najib.
Arriving there around 5.30pm, Najib proceeded to have tea with the locals and chatted for about 15 minutes in a canopy outside the coffee shop.
“I am touched by the overwhelming crowd and support by the people of Penang,” he told the members of the media who were on standby.
During the gathering, several youth were also spotted holding banners welcoming him as he joined them to take selfies and wefies. – The Vibes, March 25, 2022
