KUALA LUMPUR – Former student activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim today announced that he will run for the post of PKR Youth chief, setting the stage for a straight fight with fellow activist alumnus Fahmi Zainol.
Fahmi, who is Penang PKR Youth chief and a former student activist, declared three days ago that he would be vying for the party’s national leadership to help educate and change the perspectives of youth when it comes to politics.
Adam today said in a joint statement with lawyer Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim that he will contest the party’s top youth post under the banner of “Seangkatan”. Kamil will be Adam’s running mate.
Seangkatan will also have three youth wing vice-chief candidates and 20 nominees for the wing’s executive council, the statement said.
Adam and Kamil said that they will explain their guiding principles soon, and expressed hope that the coming party election in May will be conducted harmoniously.
“The major responsibility of upholding reformist agendas and the voice of the people in the soon-to-come 15th general election lies on us, not anyone else,” they said.
Adam Adli first made headlines in 2012 when the then 22-year-old was arrested after giving a fiery speech to 500 students outside Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris in Tg Malim.
Following an extended period out of the public eye, he then decided to return to the spotlight by announcing his decision to join PKR in September last year.
PKR will be holding its party elections for the 2022-2025 term between May 13 and 18 this year, with more than one million members registered to vote. – The Vibes, March 30, 2022
