KUALA LUMPUR – Former student activist Fahmi Zainol has set his sights on the PKR Youth wing’s top post at the party’s upcoming election in May.
In a press conference, the Penang PKR Youth chief also announced Rawang assemblyman Chia Wei Kiat as his running mate, who will be contesting for the wing’s deputy post.
He also said he will be teaming up with PKR Shah Alam division deputy chief Muhammad Izuan Kasim and former Rim assemblyman Prasant Kumar, who are both looking to become the wing’s vice-chiefs, while Batu MP P. Prabakaran will be contesting for a position in the wing’s exco.
Fahmi said the current political situation in the country has led to a negative perception among the nation’s youth.
“Therefore, we want to take the initiative to educate and change the thinking of young people in the Malaysian political arena,” he said, as quoted by Sinar Harian.
"I am confident that this election will be cleaner and fairer, with no politics of intimidation, no violence, and a more transparent system that does not favour certain groups.”
Fahmi and his three comrades made the announcements at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, here, this afternoon.
He said his team is looking to find ways to gain support among voters aged between 18 and 21, as well as first-time voters.
Fahmi added that his team is also looking to raise the level of participation among the wing’s members and other youth in the upcoming general election (GE15).
Furthermore, Fahmi said his team is looking to consolidate the Youth wing ahead of GE15.
Fahmi’s run for the top post may see him lock horns with the likes of fellow former student activist Adam Adli.
However, Fahmi welcomed the contest and had expressed hope for healthy competition.
