PUTRAJAYA – Masks will no longer be mandatory for individuals outdoors, but will still be required to be used indoors effective May 1, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced today.

“The use of masks in outdoor places and open spaces is now optional but strongly advised because masks are able to reduce the spread of the virus.

“We will still enforce mask mandates indoors,” he said during a press conference here today.

He added that places such as malls and public transport will still require the use of masks with active enforcement against those not masked-up.

He said masks can be removed during indoor activities such as lifting weights, if one is alone in an open indoor space, while eating and drinking, while delivering a speech and during any performances.

As for crowded outdoor events, Khairy said there will be no mask mandate in place, but strongly encouraged their use to reduce the risks of infection, especially among those in high-risk categories.

“The Health Ministry strongly encourages the use of masks outdoors, especially in crowded places like Ramadan bazaars, night markets, and stadiums.

“We also encourage the use of masks for those exhibiting symptoms such as fever, cough and flu, and if one is involved in activities with individuals in high-risk categories such as senior citizens and young children.”

Also announced today was the lifting of physical distancing requirements, with premises allowed to operate at full capacity from this Sunday.

“However, physical distancing is encouraged in situations where people are without masks,” said Khairy.

Khairy also announced that all activities listed on the National Security Council’s (NSC) latest standard operating procedures for the country will be removed from the list on May 15.

When asked if this includes nightclubs, he alluded to a positive answer but said to wait for finalised procedures closer to the date.

“We have and are currently carrying out engagement sessions with business owners and stakeholders on several protocols, and we will bring it up with the NSC once we have finalised them.

“The priority is that the safety of customers in these premises is ensured.” – The Vibes, April 27, 2022
