KUALA LUMPUR – Odour pollution was detected in the Saujana residential area in Rawang early today, said the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas).
In a brief statement, Luas said the incident was detected about midnight during Ops Sumber Air conducted with Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd.
So far, there will be no water supply disruption.
Luas and Air Selangor tested samples from Sg Kundang near the residential area, and detected a pollution level of 4 TON, or threshold odour number.
For now, none of Selangor’s water treatment plants has been shut down.
The authorities also conducted checks in Taman Velox, and found that the reservoir there had overflown into a drain leading to an Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) sewage treatment plant, possibly caused by a downpour.
Luas and Air Selangor have placed 14 bags of activated carbon at the outflow point and in the reservoir.
IWK is conducting clean-up works and monitoring the area.
Three days ago, it was reported that Selangor environment exco Hee Loy Sian said Air Selangor, Luas and other agencies have traced the source of pollution in Sg Selangor to an IWK sewage plant in Taman Velox.
“What happened was that the oil or solvent was disposed of into the manhole and straight into IWK,” he told the state assembly.
Later, the National Water Services Commission denied allegations that it was slow to act following the discovery of foreign effluents in the Taman Velox sewage treatment plant on November 4.
In a statement, it said the effluents detected were not the source of the river pollution that led to the closure of four water treatment plants on Tuesday.
The suspension of operations at the Rantau Panjang, and Sg Selangor Phases 1, 2 and 3 plants resulted in an unscheduled supply disruption affecting more than 1.1 million consumer accounts in the Klang Valley. – The Vibes, November 14, 2020
