GEORGE TOWN – A Penang Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry officer was remanded for four days for allegedly accepting a bribe of RM3,000.

The remand order against the 48-year-old man was issued by magistrate Tunku Intan Nadiah Tunku Mohammed Nazarin here today.

The accused, who works as the assistant enforcement officer at the ministry here, was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) here yesterday after allegedly taking a bribe of RM3,000 in Bayan Baru at 5pm.

The payment was allegedly made in return for not being issued a compound and “settling the case” of the complainant who allegedly kept subsidised liquefied petroleum gas exceeding the limit allowed.

It is understood that the officer had been committing acts of corruption since last year with an estimated total value of more than RM5,000.

He was represented by lawyers from the National Legal Aid Foundation and the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. – The Vibes, May 14, 2022
