MIRI – A driver speeding through the streets of Sibu town in central Sarawak plunged his car into Sg Rajang after slamming through an iron divider between the river and the road.

The incident happened at the Sibu Riverfront in front of the Kingwood Hotel early this morning at about 1am.

The place is in the heart of the old part of Sibu town with crowded shops and stalls.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department has deployed search-and-rescue units to try to locate the missing driver and the vehicle that apparently sank into the depths of the river that passes through the town.

The department, in its latest updates today, said the missing driver has been identified as a local named Andy Ting, aged 43.

“A witness saw the driver driving very fast in his car in front of the hotel,” said a statement from the department.

“The witness saw the car rammed through the iron divider built at the side of the riverbank. The driver and the car plunged into the river after shooting through the divider.”

The witness ran into the hotel and sought help from the reception counter. Staff at the counter called the emergency line for help, the department said.

Sibu search and rescue units are using rescue tools and also divers to locate the sunken vehicle and the driver.

The teams are still combing the river and its vicinity but so far no trace of the vehicle or the driver has been found, said the department. – The Vibes, May 27, 2022
