BUKIT MERTAJAM – Police arrested 21 individuals following reports lodged over the theft of 37 motorcycles in the span of one month since April in the Seberang Prai Tengah district, here.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Shafee Abd Samad said a special team managed to bust five syndicates specialising in motorcycle theft.

“The suspects are believed to be part of syndicates such as the Kupang Gang, Humairah Gang, Chot Gang, Pondok Gang, and Junjong Gang, and are believed to have been active since the beginning of this year.

“The 21 individuals arrested include 19 men and two women, aged between 14 and 37,” he said in a statement today.

The special operations, which he said ran from May 18 until June 1, were conducted in Bukit Tengah and Juru, as well as several areas in Kedah, namely Baling and Sik.

He added that some of the individuals detained have past criminal records involving housebreaking, motorcycle theft, and drug cases.

“Police also managed to seize 12 motorcycles, three motorcycle chassis, and one motorcycle engine.”

The case is being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code which provides for imprisonment of not less than one year, and not more than seven years, as well as a fine if found guilty. – The Vibes, June 9, 2022
