MIRI – Turbulent storms in northern and central regions of Sarawak in the last 24 hours have caused flash floods in several districts, especially Miri, Limbang, Bintulu, Marudi, Subis, Niah, Mukah and Dalat.

In Miri and the adjacent Subis district, heavy storms caused flash floods in low-lying areas last night and this morning.

Additionally, trees were uprooted by strong winds in several residential areas in Miri.

Civil Defence Unit chief for Miri, Capt Usman Harto, today told reporters here that his unit has been receiving calls for help from affected residents for the past 24 hours.

“We have deployed our ground units to Subis district where floods are reaching into the houses and longhouses. The floodwaters have overflowed into the compounds and have reached the staircases on the ground floor.

“The affected longhouses are Rumah Jalami, Rumah Sumob and Rumah Ayai.”

He added that a car in the Piasau housing estate was damaged when a tree fell on it.

In Miri city, Civil Defence personnel have been sent to the areas where trees were uprooted as well.

The Meteorological Department warned Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan of heavy storms to come. – The Vibes, August 6, 2022
