KUALA LUMPUR – Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar’s marriage with Yin Shao Loong has garnered tremendous attention after their discreet wedding ceremony last night was reported.

Social media has been set abuzz after The Vibes carried news of the confirmation of the union late last night, and the newlyweds have been flooded with congratulatory messages and warm wishes.

A photo (see main pic) uploaded by Nurul Izzah at about 7.30pm today, featuring the couple laughing joyously in front of a wedding cake, garnered about 3,500 comments and 213 shares within just an hour.

She posted a simple message along with the image: “Hello best friend, Alhamdullilah. ❤U 4000.”

Nurul Izzah’s colleagues from PKR and the Pakatan Harapan coalition, as well as many others, flocked to the newly appointed PKR vice-president’s Facebook post to wish the pair a joyful marriage.

The well-wishers included MPs Hannah Yeoh (Segambut), Vivian Wong (Sandakan), Sim Tze Tzin (Bayan Baru), Hassan Abdul Karim (Pasir Gudang) and Teo Nie Ching (Kulai).

Netizens too did not pass up the opportunity to wish the couple a lifetime of love and happiness.

Several people, presumably fans of Nurul Izzah, good-humouredly feigned being hurt by the fact that she is now “off the market” and not available to be wooed anymore.

Some referred to her as “Puteri Reformasi” (Princess of Reformation), a moniker given to her from her early years of political activism in the late 1990s, after her father Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was sacked from the government and had launched a campaign to bring reforms to the country.

Nurul Izzah, 42, is the eldest daughter of opposition leader and PKR president Anwar and Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The solemnisation ceremony was held out of the public eye, in the family’s home in Bandar Sg Long, Kajang.

PKR’s Taman Medan assemblyman Syamsul Firdaus Mohamed Supri posted on social media a brief video recording from the wedding ceremony.

According to sources, Nurul Izzah and Yin had been dating for some time but managed to keep their relationship under wraps with only a few close friends and family members having knowledge of it.

Yin is a senior research associate at Khazanah Research Institute.

He once served as the strategic communications director at the Selangor Menteri Besar’s Office during Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali’s tenure.

Yin also served as executive director of PKR think tank Institut Rakyat, which was headed by Nurul Izzah.

The 46-year-old was married to award-winning filmmaker Tan Chui Mui. The couple, who have a young son together, divorced three years ago.

Meanwhile, Nurul Izzah married businessman Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Salim at her parents’ home in Segambut in 2003, but they divorced on January 15, 2015.

They have two children, a 15-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy.

A close family friend said Anwar and Wan Azizah are extremely happy for their daughter and blessed the union by having the akad nikah at their home.

“The family is extremely delighted that Izzah has found happiness again. We wish them both a happy union blessed by Allah,” he said. – The Vibes, August 6, 2022
