MELAKA – Melaka Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation aims to collect 40,000kg of fabric waste in 24 hours to achieve the “Largest Recycle Fabric Materials Collected in a Day” record.
Its assistant director, Siti Rohayu Mohd Isa said the collection will begin from August 19 and 20, whereby the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) acknowledgement and its related certificate will be handed to the Melaka state government.
“Melaka is actually the collector of the most fabric waste in the country under a previous one-off fabric waste recycling programme.
“So we’re taking the chance to not only be listed in MBOR but we can also prevent existing landfills from becoming fabric waste disposal locations,” she said.
Fabric waste, including used clothes, curtains, soft toys, shoes, blankets and bags, can be sent to 50 drop points in the state from 8am on August 19 and will be gathered in front of the Graha Makmur building in Ayer Keroh here for the weighing process starting at 3pm on August 20.
Siti Rohayu said the programme, which is held in conjunction with Fabric Waste Recycling Day 2022, will be joined by four local authorities in the state, in addition to factories, hospitals and educational institutions.
He said the waste will then be sent to the only fabric waste processing factory in the country at Port Klang, Selangor.
“Melaka citizens who want to dispose of their fabric waste can join the programme and help Melaka be listed in MBOR for the Largest Recycle Fabric Materials Collected in a Day record,” she added. – Bernama, August 14, 2022
