KUALA LUMPUR – Police have detained five individuals who are suspected to be involved in a scam using an Android Package Kit (APK) file.

Royal Malaysia Police secretary Datuk Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin said three men and two women, aged between 17 and 21, were detained after an operation and raid in Kuala Lumpur on August 24.

“Investigations found that the suspects created and used fake profiles on popular online chat platforms where they would then entice victims by showing them photos and videos which can be accessed through another application which they would send in the form of an APK file,” Noorsiah said in a statement today.

“Victims are also required to buy a token before accessing the application.

“A successfully installed application will result in the funds being transferred from the victim’s account.”

She said the case is being investigated under Section 420/511 of the Penal Code.

The connections between this syndicate and other fraud cases are still being investigated, she said.

“As a preventive measure, we advise the public not to download or install any APK file sent to your smartphone by unknown individuals.

“We also advise the public not to install APK applications from invalid and suspicious sources.

For more information, she advised the public to contact the CCID Scam Response Centre at 03-2610 1559 or 03-2610 1559. – The Vibes, September 14, 2022
