MIRI – An explosion in a coffeeshop in the heart of Miri city at mid-afternoon today caused serious injuries to the establishment’s owner.

The 3.30pm incident happened in the Kwang Tung Cafe located next to the Miri central police station.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) and Sarawak Gas have launched an investigation.

In a statement, FRD said the initial probe showed that the blast originated from an underground gas pipe.

“The male owner suffered a broken leg and other injuries due to the explosion and has been rushed to Miri Hospital.

“Initial investigation showed that an underground gas pipe located beneath the kitchen exploded. The walls and structure and the furniture sustained damages.

“We are investigating what caused the gas pipe to explode,” the department said.
