KOTA KINABALU – An 11-year-old boy was killed when a goalpost fell on him during an annual school sports meet in Pekan Menggatal near here yesterday.

Kota Kinabalu district police chief Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the incident occurred at about 12.20pm and the Year 5 pupil of SK Lok Yuk, Menggatal was pronounced dead during treatment at Likas Hospital.

The boy sustained serious head injury and police have classified the case as sudden death, said Zaidi in a statement today.

It is said that the incident happened when the victim and his schoolmates were relocating the goalposts at the Menggatal town field.

According to a witness, the pupils were asked by teachers to relocate the goalposts, which were rusty. – Bernama, October 21, 2022
