KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is confident that he will have the necessary support to be appointed the next prime minister.

Muhyiddin, who was previously Malaysia’s eighth prime minister, said he had obtained the backing of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and other MPs.

He said this in a statement today after chairing a PN Supreme Council meeting at his residence in Bukit Damansara here today.

“The PN Supreme Council has been informed that I have held talks with GPS chief Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg (who said that) GPS MPs are willing to support me as prime minister,” Muhyiddin said.

“GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor also told me that GRS MPs are willing to put their trust in me.”

Muhyiddin did not disclose how many MPs from other coalitions or parties will be backing him.

Earlier today, GRS deputy chairman Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee claimed that several Barisan Nasional MPs will provide the required support for PN to form the government.

Additionally, he said that the coalition’s stand on rejecting cooperation with Pakatan Harapan remains firm.

This follows PN’s unexpected success in the national polls, with the coalition securing a shocking 73 parliamentary seats.

National coalition and party leaders have until 2pm tomorrow to submit to the Dewan Rakyat speaker their political composition to establish a new government for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s consideration.

They must also include the name of a prime minister candidate with the majority support of Dewan Rakyat members. – The Vibes, November 20, 2022
