KOTA KINABALU – The state government has denied that the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway is the cause of flash floods in the adjacent areas.

According to Sabah Works Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, the accusation that the national project is the root cause is without concrete evidence.

“Contrary to this claim, the design of the Pan Borneo Highway took into account the engineering aspects set by the Irrigation and Drainage Department to avoid flash floods in any areas.

“Still, the government will monitor and revise the drainage system based on needs and feedback from nearby residents,” he said in his answer to the Bongawan assemblyman Daud Yusof, who asked if action had been taken to deal with the flooding along the Pan Borneo Highway.

Bung Moktar also said that the ministry has made preparations to face the monsoon season, and that an inter-agencies meeting found many factors contributing to the flash floods.

He said they are caused by, among others, rubbish and development that has gone ahead without considering the drainage system load. – The Vibes, November 30, 2022
