KUALA LUMPUR – The Sg Semenyih Water Treatment Plant (WTP) resumed operations this morning after odour pollution forced a temporary shutdown of the unit, yesterday.

In a brief statement today, Air Selangor said that it recorded a scale of zero threshold odour number (TON), three times, enabling the water treatment plant to resume operations.

“The operational resumption involves cleaning and water treatment processes which are estimated to be completed in 12 hours.

“Following this, clean and safe treated water will then be distributed in stages to consumers in the affected areas,” said Air Selangor in their statement published on their official social media accounts.

However, another plant that remains affected by odour pollution is the Bukit Tampoi WTP.

In a brief update as of 8am this morning, Bukit Tampoi WTP still recorded an odour reading of 2 TON.

Yesterday, Air Selangor stated following the shutdown of both WTA, a total of 472 areas in five Air Selangor regions, namely Petaling (172 areas), Hulu Langat (54 areas), Sepang (196 areas), Putrajaya (23 areas) and Kuala Langat (27 areas) are expected to experience unscheduled water supply disruptions.

The cause of odour pollution was caused by a liquid spill due to an accident involving a lorry carrying perfume essence.

The accident occurred on the northbound side of the Elite Highway near Bandar Serenia in Negri Sembilan, just outside of the Selangor border.

“The spot of the accident was 6.4km away from the Sg Semenyih water treatment plant and 18km away from the one in Bukit Tampoi,” said Selangor tourism, environment, green technology and Orang Asli affairs committee chairman Hee Loy Sian in a statement yesterday. – The Vibes, December 25, 2022
