KUALA LUMPUR – Fashion retailer H&M said it has ordered its stores nationwide to check for security breaches in its fitting rooms, following viral videos showing a woman trying on clothes in a changing room in a mall.

The apparel company said on Facebook that it has also reported all findings from the inspections to the police and investigations are currently ongoing.

“In response to recent concerns about hidden cameras in H&M fitting rooms, we have conducted an inspection of the fitting rooms in all H&M stores in Malaysia and are working to ensure that there are no security breaches that will compromise the privacy of our customers, as their safety is of utmost importance to us,” it said in a statement.

Police yesterday said they were investigating the clips which are allegedly being sold on social media.

This incident was first exposed by a Twitter user known as @meleisgw even though the original post of the videos has been deleted.

Several victims were said to have contacted @meleisgw as was mentioned in subsequent tweets.

Following this, the fashion retailer lodged a report at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

Dang Wangi district police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya told The Vibes’ sister portal Getaran that the report was received on Monday and an initial probe is ongoing into when and where the incident took place.

The case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code – criminal offence to “intrude upon the privacy” of a person.

Upon conviction, an offender may be punished with imprisonment of up to five years or fined or both. – The Vibes, January 12, 2023
