KUALA LUMPUR – Sembrong MP Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said his suspension letter from Umno did not state any reason for the disciplinary action against him.
“Just received the official letter dated yesterday on the suspension of my Umno membership. No reason for the suspension was stated,” he said in posts on his social media accounts along with a copy of the letter.
The letter dated January 30 and signed by Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan states that Hishammuddin’s suspension took effect on January 27, the night of the Umno Supreme Council meeting after which a massive purge from the party was announced.
Ahmad’s letter states that Hishammuddin’s suspension will be for six years, the equivalent of two terms, in accordance with the party’s constitutional provisions.
While Hishammuddin was suspended, two other prominent Umno names were sacked, namely former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin and former Selangor party chief Tan Sri Noh Omar. Neither of them are sitting MPs, unlike Hishammuddin.
Following Hishammuddin’s suspension, the Sembrong Umno division which he led said it would seek an explanation from the supreme council, adding that the move was too severe and unjustified.
Hishammuddin is said to have led a separate faction against party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi within the party and was one of the 10 Barisan Nasional MPs who previously declared support for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister, following the conclusion of the 15th general election. – The Vibes, January 31, 2023
