KUALA LUMPUR – Former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng has applied to a United States court to delay his 10-year prison sentence following his conviction in the massive 1Malaysia Development Bhd bribery scandal.

According to Bloomberg, Ng’s defence lawyer Marc Agnifilo had applied to the court on Friday seeking for his prison sentence to begin in August.

Agnifilo explained that Ng wishes to spend time with his family, especially his 10-year-old daughter, whom he had not seen for the past four years since his arrest in Malaysia in 2018.

Agnifilo said the requested time was also to allow for Ng’s wife and child to travel from Malaysia to the US.

“Due to the amount of time Mr Ng has spent away from his minor child, and the length of his sentence, we respectfully request that Mr Ng be able to spend two months with his family before he surrenders,” Agnifilo said as quoted by Bloomberg.

Ng was extradited to the US to face trial there and is expected to face criminal charges back in Malaysia upon his release.

Agnifilo further argued that Ng was on house arrest and electronic monitoring since he was granted a US$20 million (RM89.2 million) bail by a federal magistrate in Brooklyn in May 2019.

Ng has also never violated the conditions of his release, said Agnifilo

However, Agnifilo stated that prosecutors have objected to the delay. – The Vibes, April 29, 2023
