KUALA LUMPUR – Component parties of Pakatan Harapan (PH) have thrown their support behind PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after he made an announcement that he has secured enough numbers to form the federal government.
In a brief statement, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng assured that the party’s 42 MPs will give their backing to Anwar as prime minister if he has enough numbers to form the government.
Amanah president Mohamad Sabu also said that the 11 MPs under their party affirm their support for Anwar's leadership as PH chairman.
"We also give trust to him to form the new government," said Mohamad in a statement.
Anwar, who is Port Dickson MP, had earlier today claimed that he has majority support from other parliamentarians to take over the government.
Meanwhile, Penang Chief Minister and DAP vice-chairman Chow Kon Yeow expressed surprise at the latest political development.
He said Penangites hope that the possible new government would be able to steer the country from the various challenges that are facing the people.
"I hope Anwar will be able to create a government that will overcome the Covid-19 crisis and restore the social economic health of the country,” he said when questioned by reporters in George Town.
"This is my immediate response. It (the situation) is still developing. There is not enough information. All I get is from the online media," he added.
“The people are looking for a stable and strong government to help guide them through a series of crises, such as Covid-19, economic downslide and political uncertainty.
"So a strong and stable government is what people are looking for.”
Chow said he plans to issue a follow-up statement once there is clarity about the current political situation. - The Vibes, September 23, 2020
