GEORGE TOWN – Penang DAP will meet its 19 incumbent state assemblymen, including party chairman Lim Guan Eng, to get their views on the upcoming state elections.

State party chairman Chow Kon Yeow, who is now officially the caretaker chief minister following the dissolution of the 14th legislative term today, said he needs to understand their take on matters in each of the 19 constituencies.

DAP hopes to field candidates for all the 19 seats, leaving the remaining 21 state seats to be filled by its Pakatan Harapan (PH) partners Amanah and PKR, as well as its new ally Barisan Nasional (BN), which comprises Umno, MCA and MIC.

Speculations have surfaced that all three BN components – Umno, MCA and MIC will contest in Penang, and this means either DAP, PKR or Amanah may need to sacrifice seats.

Remaining mum on this, Chow told a press conference that the process of meeting all the DAP incumbents will begin soon since the assembly is dissolved.

Chow hopes that DAP can try to meet the 30% female representation in candidates, while some candidates will be allowed to contest in the state even if they already hold Parliament seats.

It is believed that Chow and Lim will likely also contest state seats as in the past two terms. – The Vibes, June 28, 2023
