MIRI – Preschools in Sarawak will still require their teachers and pupils to use face masks.

According to state Women, Childhood, and Community Well-being Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, this preventive measure against Covid-19 is still needed inside preschool compounds.

Speaking at a gathering of Sarawak Chinese Federation women members in Kuching today, she said teachers and preschool kids must practise tight precautions.

“The Health Ministry may have made a decision not to enforce mandatory use of face masks but there must still be continuous vigilance.

“Among the preschool circles, the tight measures must be in place as there are many young kids involved.

“Even among the public, those with flu or other illnesses must still use face masks,” she said.

Fatimah said the public must remain cautious though the coronavirus may not be as deadly as before.

Towards the end of last year in Sarawak, there was a sharp surge in the number of Covid-19 infections.

Deputy premier and state public health, housing, and local government minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said 1,046 new cases were reported during the week of November 20 to 26.

“This figure is a surge from 814 cases the previous week and 616 cases the week before.

“There is also a rise in Covid-19 related admissions to intensive care units in hospitals.

“These upward trends may continue, thus the public must take the necessary precautions.

“Wear face masks when in crowded places and those who had not gone for their booster shots ought to do so,” he said.

Dr Sim had also urged those who are infected with mild symptoms and who are isolating themselves in their homes to take Paxlovid pills.

“Paxlovid is effective treatment if taken within the first three days of being infected,” he said. – The Vibes, July 1, 2023
